Can we use any lens on any camera with an adapter?

Not quite—but adapters make a lot more combinations possible. Adapters open up a ton of options, especially for manual-focus lenses, but it’s not a total free-for-all. You’ll need to check if an adapter exists for your specific combo, and whether it supports the features you care about.

1. You usually need the right type of adapter.
Adapters are made for specific pairings—like putting a Canon EF lens on a Sony E-mount camera. You can’t just grab any random ring and expect it to work; it has to match the mount on your lens and the mount on your camera.

2. Watch out for the “flange distance.”
This is the big technical hurdle. Every camera system has a specific distance between the lens mount and the sensor. If a lens is designed to sit farther away from the sensor than your camera allows, an adapter can make up the difference. But if the lens needs to be closer to the sensor than your camera’s mount allows, you generally can't adapt it without special optics (which often hurt image quality).

3. Autofocus & electronic features may not work.
Many adapters are just “dumb” metal rings—they hold the lens on, but you lose autofocus, automatic aperture control, and lens stabilization. Some newer adapters (especially for mirrorless cameras) have built-in electronics to keep some of those features working, but performance can be hit-or-miss.

4. There are special “speed boosters” too.
These are adapters with glass elements that not only fit the lens, but also widen the field of view and often make the lens faster (brighter). They're more complex and expensive, but popular for certain setups.

If you have a modern mirrorless camera (like Sony, Canon RF, Nikon Z, Fujifilm), you can adapt a huge range of older SLR and even vintage lenses, often with great results.
